Recently, discussions related to the metaverse have colored the virtual world. The rise of the conversation came after Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, revealed his vision to build a virtual world called the metaverse.
Metaverse Zuckerberg will be in the form of a virtual world that brings experiences closer to the real world, not just interrelated applications and social media accounts.
To provide an experience that is closer to the real world, Mark Zuckerberg’s metaverse takes advantage of various new technologies that are now popular.
Reporting from investopedia.com, Metaverse combines at least five technologies at once, namely social media, online games, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and cryptocurrencies. These five aspects will integrate its users into an interactive world.
AR and VR technologies will play an important role in the metaverse. VR will function as an instrument to visually present the virtual world. By using VR, the inhabitants of the metaverse are able to witness the visual aspects of the metaverse that are close to reality.
Then AR will complement VR by presenting audio and sensory features that allow residents of the metaverse to interact directly with the metaverse.
The concept of the metaverse is actually not a new concept. Reporting from wsj.com, the metaverse is actually inspired by various science fiction films and novels, such as “Ready Player One” (2018) and “Snow Crash” (1992).
Warner Bros., as quoted from wsj.com, describes the metaverse as a new world when the human world is destroyed by climate change.
Regarding Facebook, as reported by fortune.com, Zuckerberg will build a holographic world that allows social media users to interact with each other like in the real world.
Social media, with the presence of Zuckerberg’s metaverse, not only provides features for replying to messages and comments, but also multi-perspective visuals and touches that feel real.
